Trump says US will stop paying Israel by year end

05 Nov 2026, 12:00 GMT · London
President Donald Trump says he and Benjamin Netanyahu agreed months ago that annual American funding to Israel will stop by the end of 2026. The White House has not clarified which budget lines he means.

President Donald Trump says the United States will stop providing funding to Israel by the end of this year under a deal he struck months ago with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

In a telephone interview he said America would no longer be paying Israel by year end, while adding that Washington would still help if needed and that Israel could buy weapons from the United States. He put the annual figure at about 4 billion dollars. A long standing memorandum that channels roughly 3.8 billion dollars a year in military assistance actually runs to the end of 2028, so it remains unclear which accounts he was describing. The Israeli prime minister's office had not commented in early coverage, and clarification from the White House was still pending.

The politics are sharper than the spreadsheet. Aid to Israel has become a partisan flashpoint after the Gaza war, with polls showing nearly half of American voters saying the United States is too supportive. In July a House amendment to cut billions in security aid drew more than a hundred Democratic votes though it failed overall. Netanyahu himself said in a May interview that he wants to draw US financial support down to zero over a decade and to start immediately.

Trump framed the supposed cutoff as proof that Democrats were wrong to treat the subsidy as a stick against Republicans. Allies of Israel hear something else: uncertainty over whether the security pipeline survives midterm defeat and a White House that is rewriting the terms in public.

Until budgets and memoranda are published, the firm public claim is Trump's alone: that he and Netanyahu already agreed the payments stop by New Year, with purchases replacing grants if hardware is required.
