Trump says a Russia Ukraine deal is very close after meeting Putin's envoy

President Donald Trump says agreement with Russia on Ukraine is very close after hosting Kirill Dmitriev at the White House. He offered no details and did not meet a visiting Ukrainian delegation the same day.

President Donald Trump says a deal to end the Russia Ukraine war is very close after he met Kirill Dmitriev, an envoy linked to Vladimir Putin, at the White House.

Trump gave no concrete terms. He suggested the understanding could reach beyond Ukraine and touch all of Europe, a phrase that immediately fuelled speculation about security guarantees, sanctions relief or territorial arrangements without confirming any of them. He did not meet a Ukrainian delegation that was also in Washington around the same time.

The encounter followed a separate track led by Melania Trump, who hosted Russian and Ukrainian representatives to mark a localised truce around Oleshky. That pause, lasting from 27 October to 1 November, allowed roughly 800 civilians to leave the Russian occupied town in Kherson region. The first lady's channel was presented as a humanitarian opening; the president's meeting with Dmitriev is being sold as the political follow through.

Sceptics note that previous Trump claims of imminent breakthroughs have come and gone while fighting continues. Ukrainian officials have repeatedly warned against any settlement that freezes occupation lines without Kyiv's consent. Russian envoys, for their part, tend to press for recognition of battlefield gains and limits on Ukraine's future alliances.

What is verified today is limited but notable. Trump met Dmitriev, called a deal very close, floated a scope larger than Ukraine alone, skipped the Ukrainian visitors, and did so days after Melania's Oleshky humanitarian window closed. Whether those strands produce a text that both Moscow and Kyiv will sign remains the unanswered test.
