Silicon Valley elites rethink politics after midterm backlash

06 Nov 2026, 10:10 GMT · London
AI executives and tech donors who aligned with Donald Trump are plotting a new political strategy after that wager soured at the ballot box.

Silicon Valley elites and artificial intelligence executives are redrawing their political playbook after an alliance with Donald Trump backfired in the midterm elections.

Heavy campaign spending and public alignment with the White House failed to deliver the outcomes many founders and investors sought. Voters in key races punished candidates tied to tech money and to the costs of the AI buildout, leaving donors who bet on Trump facing a Congress and state houses less friendly to unconstrained data centre expansion.

Industry figures now talk of quieter lobbying, broader bipartisan outreach and messaging that softens the industry's association with one party. Some want to stress jobs and innovation rather than culture war fights; others simply want to avoid becoming the face of another losing ticket.

The recalibration matters because AI capital and chip supply chains still depend on federal permits, power policy and export rules. After the midterms, political permission looks scarcer than venture funding. How quickly Valley leaders can rebuild credibility with both parties will shape the next round of regulation and the industry's social licence to keep building at speed.
