Saudi led coalition says it downed a missile aimed at Medina region

05 Nov 2026, 20:48 GMT · London
Coalition air defences destroyed a ballistic missile fired by Yemen's Houthis toward the Medina region, officials say. Civil defence had just warned of danger near the oil port of Yanbu, which the Houthis deny targeting as a holy city.

The Saudi led coalition fighting Yemen's Houthis says its air defences intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile fired toward the Medina region, home to one of Islam's holiest cities.

Coalition spokesman Turki al Malki announced the interception on Thursday minutes after Saudi civil defence warned of potential danger near the strategic Red Sea port of Yanbu. The early warning platform later said the threat had passed. Yanbu is a major oil export hub and a key outlet for crude moved across the kingdom on the East West pipeline, a route that has mattered more since the wider war with Iran disrupted Gulf shipping.

The Houthis rejected any suggestion they were aiming at Medina itself. Military spokesman Yahya Saree called that claim a blatant falsehood and said Houthi operations target only oil facilities and military bases. The group has struck Yanbu and other Saudi airports, energy sites and bases repeatedly in recent months, disrupting air traffic and keeping civil defence on alert.

On the ground inside Yemen, the internationally recognised government claimed fresh gains around Sanamat in Taiz governorate and said its forces carried out more than a thousand targeting operations in a day. Those kill and destruction figures have not been independently verified. Analysts at the Sanaa Center for Strategic Studies describe a war of attrition that is increasingly tied to the wider regional confrontation with Iran rather than to Yemen's internal balance alone.

The Medina region alert will resonate far beyond the battlefield. Any missile track near Islam's second holiest city raises the political temperature even when interceptors succeed. For Riyadh the episode underlines why Yanbu and the pipeline corridor remain priority targets to defend. For the Houthis the denial is an attempt to separate attacks on energy and military sites from the charge of menacing a sacred city.
