Russian ballistic missiles hit Kyiv area and injure two

Debris damages flats and a kindergarten building as officials warn of further strikes days before planned talks in Abu Dhabi.

Russian forces launched a ballistic missile attack that struck the Kyiv area on Saturday, injuring two people and damaging residential buildings as Ukraine prepares for another round of United States led talks with Moscow.

Mayor Vitali Klitschko said explosions shook the suburbs and that debris hit a five storey apartment block in a western district, with the facade of another residential building also damaged. The city’s military administration reported injuries to two civilians and damage to a building that houses a kindergarten. Officials kept warning residents that further strikes were possible hours after the first impacts.

The attack comes three days before Ukrainian and Russian teams are due to open talks in Abu Dhabi aimed at ending a war that has lasted more than four years. The last comparable round was in February. On Thursday President Donald Trump said a deal might be close after meeting Vladimir Putin’s envoy Kirill Dmitriev at the White House, while Melania Trump hosted Russian and Ukrainian representatives linked to a localised truce she helped encourage in Oleshky. That truce expired last Sunday.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has also been pressing Western allies for concrete post war security guarantees after meetings in Brussels that covered reconstruction, next year’s funding and long term support. Officials from the United States, Britain, France, Germany and the European Union took part, alongside World Bank and private investment representatives, according to Ukrainian negotiator Rustem Umerov.

The Kyiv strike follows a deadly Russian hit on an aid distribution point in Komyshuvakha in the Zaporizhia region, where the death toll has risen to fifty according to Ukraine’s emergency service, among the deadliest civilian tolls of the year.

Military pressure around the capital therefore lands beside a crowded diplomatic calendar. Kyiv wants firm allied guarantees before any ceasefire architecture takes shape, while Moscow continues long range strikes even as envoys discuss openings in the Gulf. Residents in Kyiv are left watching both air alerts and headlines about imminent deals that have yet to stop the missiles.
