Providence voters back city move to divest from Israel linked holdings

06 Nov 2026, 17:20 GMT · London
About three quarters of ballots in the Rhode Island city favoured an ordinance telling officials to drop investments tied to what campaigners call genocide and apartheid.

Voters in Providence, Rhode Island, have approved an ordinance calling on the city to end investments that support Israel in terms campaigners describe as genocide and apartheid.

About 75 percent of those who cast ballots backed the measure, an emphatic local result that advocates cast as part of a wider shift toward pro Palestine politics in parts of the United States. The vote instructs city officials to unwind holdings tied to the targeted categories, though the practical timeline for any sell off will depend on how the ordinance is implemented and on existing financial contracts.

Supporters say municipal money should not underwrite occupation or military campaigning in Gaza and the West Bank. Opponents typically argue that such divestment singles out one country, harms pension returns, or oversimplifies a complex conflict. Similar debates have played out on US campuses and in other city councils, but a three to one margin in a state capital vote gives the Providence result unusual weight as a signal of changing Democratic and progressive voter sentiment after years of war coverage.

City lawyers and finance officers must now translate the ballot win into concrete portfolio changes. How fast Providence acts, and whether other US cities follow, will determine whether the vote remains a symbolic milestone or the start of a broader municipal divestment wave.
