US tech shares rebound after midterm AI selloff

06 Nov 2026, 16:23 GMT · London
The Nasdaq climbed in Friday trade as chipmakers clawed back part of Thursday's steep losses tied to fears of slower AI growth under Democrats.

United States technology shares bounced on Friday after a bruising midterm selloff that had wiped trillions from market values on worries that Democratic gains would slow the artificial intelligence boom.

The Nasdaq Composite opened more than one percent higher and kept rising in early trade, reversing part of Thursday's drop of about five and a half percent. The S&P 500 also edged up while the Dow was little changed. Chip and AI linked names that led the plunge led the repair job.

Nvidia, which had shed hundreds of billions in value after a slide of more than nine percent, jumped more than six percent at the open. AMD and Micron, both down more than seventeen percent on Thursday, posted strong double digit percentage gains in early Friday dealing. Tesla and other previously hit names showed smaller recoveries.

Investors had sold technology stocks partly because they expect a Democratic Congress to tighten rules on data centres, power use and AI buildouts. Fresh employment figures that showed a surprisingly firm hiring print added to a mixed macro picture and helped some buyers step back in.

The rebound does not erase Thursday's damage or settle the policy debate. Traders are still parsing how far new majorities will go on AI scrutiny, export controls and energy permits. For now the message from the tape is simpler: part of the panic faded once bargain hunters returned to the same chip giants that led the rout.
