Melania Trump hosts Russian and Ukrainian officials at the White House

05 Nov 2026, 19:08 GMT · London
The US first lady urged a more lasting truce after the Oleshky evacuation pause, bringing senior Russian and Ukrainian figures together in Washington. Both sides thanked her for a role in last week's local ceasefire.

Melania Trump welcomed Russian and Ukrainian officials to the White House on Thursday and called for a more enduring ceasefire after last week's humanitarian pause around Oleshky in southern Kherson.

The White House presented the gathering as a rare moment in which a first lady personally brought representatives of two warring states into the building for diplomacy. Among those present were Kremlin envoy Kirill Dmitriev, Russian human rights commissioner Yana Lantratova, Ukrainian MP David Arakhamia and Ukraine's human rights commissioner Dmytro Lubinets.

Hundreds of Oleshky residents facing hunger and bombardment were able to leave during a six day local truce that Moscow and Kyiv both credited her with helping to broker. She said she had reviewed demining plans, aerial images, roads, evacuation routes, hospital access and medical resources, and hoped the episode would inspire wider peace. She handed Dmitriev and Arakhamia personal letters for their presidents and thanked both Volodymyr Zelensky and Vladimir Putin without rehearsing the origins of the full scale invasion.

Dmitriev thanked her for saving lives and gave her a framed drawing by an eleven year old evacuee. All parties conveyed gratitude from their presidents for her part in the local ceasefire, even while broader official peace talks have stalled for months.

The meeting does not itself end the war. It does keep a civilian track open at a senior symbolic level, and it ties the first lady's staff to any follow on humanitarian steps that may be attempted while soldiers keep fighting elsewhere.
